Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of people suffering from disturbances of the mind and emotions. Unfortunately, psychiatry has become preoccupied with inventing labels for patterns of human behavior and speaking of these behaviors as if they were actually medical or psychological disorders. Through its labeling of people and its disrespect for spiritual beliefs, psychiatry has failed to answer many of the current concerns of society and is increasingly regarded as having lost its way. This book 21st Century Psychiatry was written with the aim of introducing a practice of psychiatry that addresses body, mind, and spirit. Therefore it is only to be expected that the contents of this book may be critical of much of current psychiatry whose methods are rooted in materialism. This book is not meant to be used as a do-it-yourself textbook of psychiatry but one that would supplement other professional input.
